What makes people happy?
What causes Happiness? Must you be smiling for you to be happy? I’m usually skeptical of physiological studies, but a recent report changed my mind. In the study, the participants who appeared gloomy were asked to force a smile for two minutes. Surprisingly, they all became cheerful after putting on fake smiles for two minutes. Have you ever wondered why online marketers use happy captions in their ads? Philosophers have spent countless hours creating theories that try to decipher how happiness works without much success. One thing they all tend to agree on is that these are the ingredients that make one happy.
Family, Relationships and Attraction
Whether romantic, casual or formal, all relationships are founded on unwritten laws. Laws are essentially a system of official rules that we follow, often as a part of a society or community. When we break them, there is some form of consequences we must face as a penalty for our actions.
Attraction is the glue that holds the social fabric together. A law that, all too often, people fail to recognize and regularly go against. Thus, they brace themselves to face the harsh penalties: ill health, ill wealth, miserable love lives, and difficult lives in general. By directly working in opposition to this very basic life thought, we essentially hand over ourselves to the fine with which we pay with our own happiness and wellbeing.
Happiness is founded on the give and take principle. The law of reciprocity is one that is often talked about, and often misunderstood. It is so basic that people, complete with their natural and unknowing tendencies, try and pick it apart and make it difficult. They want to know the specific structures of this law, the code to crack it, and hacks to make it work faster, or better, or more accurately.
People are so desperate to make it work that they fail to realize a very simple yet very critical fact about reciprocity: it is so basic that you truly cannot get any simpler. Without complicating it in any way, the law of attraction works like this: want something, and get something. Period. There is nothing else required to reap the benefits of following the principle, as you are intended to. Unfortunately, human psychology steps in and removes the simplicity from it.
Self-esteem is when you think to believe in yourself when no one else will. Our natural tendencies cause is to believe it is false, that we are unworthy, and to otherwise cloud our mind with noise that takes away from the simplicity of happiness. As a result of this noisy clutter, we forget that we’re worthy.
We add in many other elements, such as obsessing, doubting, worrying, and compulsively lying to ourselves and others about what we actually feel inside. I do believe it though! we argue, trying to convince ourselves that the conviction with which we utter our affirmations accurately reflects the confidence we feel inside when it comes to those same affirmations. In reality, we are often at internal war with ourselves, trying desperately to make it easier while our highly trained minds attempt to infuse it with difficulties.
Confidence in yourself and in others
We believe worrying will give us the attention needed to see the opportunities passing us by, that doubting will protect us if they don’t come yet again, and that obsessing will ensure that we are clear enough in what we are asking for. By lying, we hope that maybe the universe hears our false confidence, rather than the true feelings we are feeling inside which often reflect anything but the hope, faith, and courage that is needed to actually believe in this stuff and make it work for us.
High self-confidence had existed since as early as 391 BC when it was officially documented by a Greek philosopher known as Plato. In reference to happiness, he noted: Likes tend toward likes. Since then, this phenomenon has been studied, torn apart, slapped back together in a series of unnecessarily complex guides, and ultimately become a topic of interest for many people who wish so desperately to lead a better life. In addition to having firm roots in the real-world, happiness also boasts the fact that it is backed by supporting evidence collected from hundreds of studies done across the world over many years.
Harnessing positive thoughts
Psychologists have proven that we’re in control of our thoughts by asking mentally ill patients to learn to refocus their thoughts to those that are more positive to attract a more positive and joyous lifestyle. Neurologists have proven that visualization, a key component in what makes us happy, helps people create a better future with more clarity and conviction. Geneticists have proven that the limiting beliefs you hold in your mind are likely inherited and that you can use reaffirmation to eliminate them from your life.
Now, we have to veer away from the philosophical vibe. We are going to look at the most relevant example of happy captions. You will notice that Social Media photos with happy captions tend to garner more likes. Coincidence? I doubt it. Looking at a happy picture or video post no matter how low is your mood for that moment, you can’t help but smile or laugh at what you see in the picture or video. Even those that look innocent and not at all funny but reading the captions that detail the funny or happy angle of that image you will also smile or laugh. It just proves that indeed happiness is contagious.
